NAD+ helps your cat’s cells turn nutrients from food into usable energy. Cells also use NAD+ in maintenance and repair. Nicotinamide mononucleotide, or NMN, is one of the starting materials cells can use to make it. That connection explains the interest in NMN for cats: researchers are investigating whether providing more of this precursor can help the processes that keep cells working as animals age. 1

NMN has produced encouraging results in mouse experiments. Feline research is much narrower: experiments with isolated cat egg cells do not establish that an oral supplement improves a pet cat’s energy, health or lifespan. Nor do they provide a feline dose. 3 4

NMN, NR and NAD+ are different compounds. Understanding what each does makes it easier to compare NMN alone with a broader daily formula, and to separate a supplement’s nutritional purpose from a result that has actually been demonstrated in cats.

  • NMN is a starting material cells can use to make NAD+. NAD+ helps cells use nutrients for energy; cells also use it in maintenance and repair. 1
  • Mouse studies have found selected metabolic and activity benefits. Feline egg-cell experiments do not establish an oral NMN benefit, dose or lifespan effect in pet cats. 3 4
  • NMN, NR and NAM are different compounds. Their positions in a pathway do not show which oral ingredient works better in cats. 1 2
  • Animal safety findings need their actual context: a short beagle experiment reported increased creatinine and uric acid, and rat tolerability varied with dose. 5 6
  • Hollywood Elixir contains NR, not NMN. Its complete 17-active NAD+ system combines precursor supply with mitochondrial cofactors and antioxidant nutrition in a food-mixed powder. 13
  • Keep complete food and meal acceptance central. Discuss the actual product and applicable serving with your veterinarian, especially when your cat has a medical condition or takes medicines.

What NMN does in the NAD+ pathway

A meal supplies energy-containing nutrients. To use that energy, cells carry out chemical reactions in which NAD+ accepts electrons and becomes NADH. Those electrons can then pass through machinery in the mitochondria that helps produce ATP, the molecule that supplies energy for much of a cell’s work. NAD+ becomes available to take part again. 1 11

Other enzymes consume NAD+ while regulating cellular activity and responding to damage. Cells therefore need to replenish some of their NAD+ as well as recycle it. NMN is an intermediate in one of those replenishment pathways: an enzyme converts it into NAD+. It is related to vitamin B3, but it is a distinct compound. 1

That is the basis of “cellular energy support.” NMN is not a calorie source or a stimulant. Our guide to NAD+, NADH, NADP+ and NADPH explains how these related molecules divide the work.

See how cells make, use and recycle NAD+ in our NADome and NADomics guide.

NMN vs NR vs NAM: three different starting materials

The similar abbreviations describe different molecules:

  • NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide. Cells can use it in the final step toward NAD+.
  • NR is nicotinamide riboside. An enzyme adds a phosphate group to NR to form NMN, which can then become NAD+.
  • NAM is nicotinamide, also called niacinamide. It is a form of vitamin B3 that enters a different recycling step before reaching NMN. 1

These connections explain why several ingredients are sold for NAD+ support. They also explain why the exact name on a label matters: a study of NMN is not a study of NR, NAM or a finished blend.

NMN’s position one step from NAD+ can sound like a reason to prefer it. The route inside a cell, however, does not tell us which swallowed precursor will work better in a cat. The NR for cats guide examines that ingredient separately.

What happens after NMN is swallowed?

A molecule in a pathway diagram is already at the place where the next reaction happens. An oral supplement has a longer journey: it must pass through digestion, absorption and further metabolism before contributing to a tissue’s NAD+ supply.

Researchers have traced that journey in mice using specially labeled NR and NMN. After oral administration, much of the material appeared in circulation as nicotinamide. Some intact precursor contributed to liver NAD+, while its contribution differed in other tissues. Giving the compounds intravenously produced a different pattern. 2

The experiment shows why counting biochemical steps is an incomplete way to compare supplements. It does not mean oral NMN is useless, or that NR and NMN are clinically interchangeable. It means delivery and processing matter—and those mouse measurements do not establish oral absorption in cats.

Why NMN has attracted healthy-aging research

One influential experiment followed male mice given NMN in their drinking water for 12 months, from five to 17 months of age. Researchers tested two amounts, 100 and 300 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, and examined several aspects of metabolism and physical function. These are research conditions, not pet-feeding directions. 3

NMN reduced age-associated weight gain and improved selected measures of insulin sensitivity, energy metabolism and physical activity. Insulin sensitivity describes how well the body responds to insulin, a hormone involved in regulating blood sugar. The effects varied with the amount given and the outcome measured. No significant survival difference was detected during the intervention. 3

Those findings make NMN interesting for a concrete reason: supplying a NAD+ precursor changed more than a laboratory concentration in these mice. Researchers also observed changes in how the animals functioned. Whether comparable benefits occur in cats remains a separate, unanswered question.

What has actually been studied in cats?

There is feline NMN research, but it is important to picture what was tested. In a Kyoto University conference report, researchers added NMN and niacin to the culture medium surrounding egg cells collected from domestic cats. They assessed cell maturation and markers of oxidative stress while developing methods for feline assisted reproduction. 4

That experiment concerns isolated cells in a laboratory. It does not tell us how a cat absorbs an NMN powder, what amount is appropriate, or whether an older cat becomes more active after eating it.

The research reviewed for this guide does not establish that oral NMN improves energy, cognition or lifespan in pet cats. It also does not establish a universal age-related fall in feline NAD+ that can be diagnosed from more sleeping or less jumping. The broader NAD+ for cats guide puts the feline research into its wider biological context.

NMN is a starting material for NAD+, which helps your cat’s cells turn nutrients from food into usable energy. Cells also use NAD+ in maintenance and repair.

Is NMN safe for cats? What animal studies can tell us

The available animal safety studies are useful, but they do not supply a long-term safety answer for cats.

In one 14-day experiment, ten healthy adult beagles were divided between NMN and control groups. The treated dogs continued to show normal spontaneous activity, but their blood creatinine and uric acid increased. Those changes belong in the safety account alongside the reassuring observations. They do not, by themselves, diagnose kidney disease caused by NMN. 5

A separate 91-day study in rats found that tolerability depended on the dose and sex of the animals; the highest amount tested reduced food consumption and body-weight gain. 6

Neither study tested cats. Calling NMN “naturally occurring” or pointing to animals that tolerated a particular experiment cannot establish an appropriate amount for a senior cat with an individual medical history.

NMN dosage for cats: why there is no reliable chart

There is no established feline dose for NMN in the studies reviewed here. A human capsule, a mouse dose expressed per kilogram and a manufacturer’s feeding recommendation each describe different things. Dividing a human amount by your cat’s body weight does not account for species differences in absorption, metabolism or tolerance.

If you are considering NMN, take the exact label to your veterinarian. The useful details are the ingredient form, the amount in a capsule or measured portion, every additional ingredient, and what your cat already receives. This gives the veterinarian something specific to assess alongside age, weight, diagnoses and medicines.

A recommendation printed on a cat product is a manufacturer’s use instruction. It should not be presented as a dose validated by a feline clinical trial unless that trial actually exists. More milligrams do not automatically mean more useful support.

When an older cat’s familiar routine changes

A cat who hesitates before reaching a favorite perch, grooms less thoroughly or loses weight is giving you information worth acting on. These changes can have medical causes and should not automatically be attributed to age. Cornell’s guidance for older cats recommends veterinary attention to changes in activity, weight and everyday function. 7

Describe the change rather than interpreting it as low NAD+. “She now uses the chair before the windowsill” gives a veterinarian more to work with than “she needs an energy supplement.” Note when it began; a short video can make a movement change easier to explain.

Our guides to a senior cat losing weight, muscle loss in older cats and new hiding behavior cover those observations in more detail. Interest in healthy-aging nutrition can be part of the conversation once the change itself has been assessed.

Kidney disease, heart disease and other treatments

A cat with kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or several prescribed medicines needs the supplement decision made within that care plan. The studies discussed here do not establish NMN as a treatment for those conditions or map its interactions in cats. Bring the food, medicine and supplement labels together, including products added only occasionally.

The heart-health question illustrates why the context matters. Researchers found protective effects of NMN in mice exposed to doxorubicin, a chemotherapy drug, including effects on drug-related heart injury and physical-function loss. That was a model of treatment toxicity, not a trial in cats with naturally occurring heart disease. 8

For a cat receiving cardiac or oncology care, ask the treating veterinarian before adding NMN or an antioxidant blend. A promising mouse experiment does not supply a feline co-treatment plan. Our cancer and prevention guide for cats belongs to the wider discussion; it is not evidence that NMN prevents cancer.

Your cat’s food already supports NAD metabolism

Cats need dietary niacin, or vitamin B3, because they cannot make substantial amounts from tryptophan. A complete and balanced food supplies that nutritional foundation; niacin deficiency is uncommon in cats eating such a diet. 9

This makes two questions worth separating. Does the food meet your cat’s essential needs? And would adding a particular NAD+ precursor offer something useful beyond that foundation? An NMN supplement is not needed to turn an already complete food into a complete diet. 10

Keep that distinction when comparing cat vitamins and supplements. An additional healthy-aging formula should have a purpose you can explain and fit the cat’s overall intake. It should also leave room for the food that provides the protein, calories and essential nutrients your cat relies on.

In a 12-month study in mice, NMN improved measures of insulin sensitivity and physical activity. Those findings help explain the interest in NAD+ precursors for maintaining function with age.

DVM Voice: Clinical Vignette of a Common Pattern in Senior Cat Aging

Case provided by JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM

Sasha, a 12-year-old cat, was brought in after her owner noticed increased thirst and urination, lethargy, vomiting, and a generally unkempt appearance. Examination showed weight loss, elevated blood pressure, and reduced vitality.

Diagnostic testing revealed elevated kidney markers, poorly concentrated urine, and protein loss in the urine — findings consistent with chronic kidney disease, one of the most common chronic conditions in senior cats.

Her care required a kidney-focused diet, blood pressure management, targeted supplementation, medication support, and regular monitoring — a necessary plan, but one started after clinical signs were already visible.

Clinical takeaway: Sasha’s case reflects why senior-cat wellness should begin before obvious decline. Earlier monitoring, body-condition tracking, hydration awareness, antioxidant support, and daily cellular resilience may help support quality of life as cats age.

Single-case vignette. Not generalizable. Veterinary diagnosis and monitoring are essential for increased thirst, urination, vomiting, lethargy, weight loss, or suspected kidney disease.

Why Hollywood Elixir takes a broader NAD+ approach

The appeal of NMN begins with a worthwhile subject: the cellular work behind healthy aging. Precursor supply is one part of that work. Cells also need the machinery that transfers electrons to help produce energy, and antioxidant systems that manage reactive molecules.

Hollywood Elixir is La Petite Labs’ complete 17-active NAD+ longevity system for adult dogs and cats. It uses nicotinamide riboside, or NR, rather than NMN, and brings that precursor together with mitochondrial cofactors, antioxidant ingredients and other nutrients in a food-mixed powder. 13

Three roles make the design easier to understand. NR provides starting material for making NAD+. CoQ10 carries electrons further along the mitochondrial energy process. Reduced glutathione belongs to the antioxidant system; cells recycle it using NADPH, a related molecule with a different job from NAD+. 1 11 12

Hollywood Elixir brings those connected nutritional roles together in a ready-made daily formula. You can add the applicable portion to a meal without building a routine from separate precursor, cofactor and antioxidant products, while still seeing exactly what the complete panel contains. These are reasons for the formula’s design; the studies in this guide did not test the finished Hollywood Elixir blend in cats. Our guides to mitochondrial support and inflammation and antioxidant biology explore the surrounding science.

The complete formula, beyond three familiar ingredients

NR, CoQ10 and glutathione are examples from the system, not its entire contents. Hollywood Elixir also includes niacin, riboflavin, vitamins B6 and B12, astaxanthin, vitamins C and E, resveratrol, quercetin, beta-glucans, reishi, spirulina, blueberry powder and whey protein isolate. Together, these make up the 17 declared actives. 13

A full 2.5 g sachet declares 60 mg of NR, 40 mg of CoQ10 and 50 mg of glutathione. The ingredient guide identifies the NR form as nicotinamide riboside tartrate. These are composition statements, not a recommended NMN dose or proof that one full sachet is appropriate for every cat. 13

The complete Hollywood Elixir ingredient guide shows the other amounts and forms. Read it as a whole formulation: which nutritional roles are included, what your cat already receives, and which current serving applies. “Complete system” describes that formulation approach; it does not mean the powder replaces a complete cat food.

How to assess an NMN supplement for cats

Begin with the actual contents. A single-ingredient NMN product, a human “longevity stack” and an NR-based pet formula are different purchases, even when they all use NAD+ language.

A useful label lets you identify the full ingredient name, the amount in the portion you would give, and every other active or excipient. If a manufacturer supplies batch testing, check what the report actually measured and whether the batch matches. A contaminant report and an ingredient-identity or potency assay answer different questions.

For a multi-ingredient formula, compare the complete panel with existing products to see what overlaps. For a single ingredient, consider what it adds to the routine and what remains unknown about its use in cats. Follow the product’s storage directions and expiry information. A confident claim on the front of a pack cannot replace those practical details.

Make the feeding routine work for your cat

A powder only becomes part of the routine if your cat eats the food containing it. Hollywood Elixir is designed to be mixed into the usual food at the applicable serving; check the current directions rather than assuming the whole sachet is the daily amount for every cat. 13

Keep the familiar meal acceptable. If your cat refuses food, don’t “wait them out.” Offer the usual unsupplemented food and seek veterinary advice if appetite is reduced or the cat stops eating. Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian promptly about feline appetite loss; forcing food can make an aversion worse. 14

An uneaten meal also means you do not know how much supplement was consumed. Avoid trying to make up an uncertain amount by adding more. The practical advantage of a prepared food-mixed formula is a clear, repeatable routine—not a requirement to make dinner a negotiation.

Kittens, younger adults and preventive use

The research does not establish an age at which a healthy cat should begin NMN, or show that starting it in kittenhood produces a later-life advantage. Growth has its own nutritional requirements, so a kitten’s food and veterinary care remain the starting point. 10

A healthy adult cat is a different situation from a cat with a new symptom. An owner can reasonably be interested in longevity nutrition for cats before a problem appears, while recognizing that the feline benefit of extra NMN remains unestablished.

Hollywood Elixir is positioned for adult dogs and cats. For a kitten, a pregnant or nursing cat, or a cat receiving medical treatment, discuss the complete product with the veterinarian before use. Its wider formulation is a nutritional choice, not a reason to assume every life stage has the same needs. 13

Tabby cat sitting at a table with a food bowl and Hollywood Elixir box

How soon should you expect to notice a change?

There is no reliable feline NMN timetable for improved play, grooming or stamina in the evidence reviewed here. A 12-month mouse experiment does not establish a response within a few weeks in a cat. A manufacturer’s suggested routine is also different from a measured feline benefit. 3

If a supplement is appropriate, agree in advance on what you will observe and when to review it. Choose something recognizable: whether your cat reaches a usual resting place, finishes familiar meals, or joins the same brief play session. Record changes in food, medicines and household routine during the same period.

For a cat who is already doing well, there may be no visible change. A brighter week—or several unchanged weeks—cannot by itself show that a supplement is slowing aging. The record can still help you and your veterinarian decide whether the product is tolerated, useful for the intended purpose and practical to continue.

Possible side effects and when to call the veterinarian

The studies reviewed here do not provide a dependable list or frequency of NMN side effects in cats. Appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea or a change in behavior after introducing a product should be treated as observations to investigate, rather than an expected adjustment period.

Pause the new product and contact your veterinarian about concerning changes. If your cat stops eating, seek advice promptly; do not keep offering only the supplemented meal. Repeated vomiting, marked lethargy or possible dehydration also call for veterinary attention. 14

Have the label, amount offered, estimated amount consumed and time of the change ready. For an accidental excess, contact the veterinarian with those details rather than waiting for symptoms or trying to correct it with another supplement.

Choosing healthy-aging support with a clear purpose

NMN is worth understanding because it connects to something cells need every day: NAD+ for using food-derived energy and carrying out maintenance. Mouse research gives that interest substance. What it does not yet give a cat owner is a proven oral NMN benefit, a validated feline dose or an expectation of longer life.

Hollywood Elixir brings NR, mitochondrial cofactors and antioxidant ingredients together in a complete 17-active NAD+ system. Its ready-made powder gives these connected nutritional roles one place in the feeding routine, without the work of assembling separate supplements. The full composition is available to inspect. 13

Explore the Hollywood Elixir system, then check the current product and serving options against your cat’s diet and care plan. That turns an interest in a molecule into a considered choice about the whole daily routine.

Hollywood Elixir combines NR for making NAD+ with nutrients involved in cellular energy and antioxidant defenses. Its 17-active formula supplies them together, so you do not have to assemble a routine from separate supplements.

FAQ

What is NMN, and why is it discussed for cats?

NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide, a starting material cells can use to make NAD+. NAD+ helps cells turn food-derived nutrients into usable energy. Cells also use it in maintenance and repair. Positive mouse findings explain the interest in healthy aging, but they do not establish that an oral NMN supplement benefits cats. 1 3

What side effects should I watch for after starting NMN?

Feline studies do not establish a reliable side-effect list or frequency for NMN. Monitor appetite, vomiting, stool and behavior after introducing any new product. Pause it and contact your veterinarian about concerning changes. If your cat stops eating, seek advice promptly rather than treating it as a normal adjustment period. 14

Can cats with kidney disease or other medical conditions take NMN?

The research reviewed here does not establish NMN as safe or beneficial for cats with kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease or other chronic conditions. Ask the treating veterinarian before adding it, and provide the complete product label, medicines and other supplements. Mouse or dog findings cannot supply a feline treatment plan.

What is the NMN dosage for cats?

No validated feline NMN dose is established by the studies discussed here. Do not scale a human capsule or mouse research amount into a home dose. A manufacturer’s feeding instruction is also different from a dose tested in a feline clinical trial. Have your veterinarian assess the exact ingredient, formula and proposed serving.

What should I look for in an NMN supplement for cats?

Look for the exact ingredient name, amount per measured portion, complete list of other ingredients, applicable feeding directions and useful batch-testing information. Check what each test actually measures. Compare any overlap with existing products and consider whether your cat will accept the format. Hollywood Elixir is a different option: its 17-active NAD+ system contains NR, not NMN. 13

Do mouse NMN studies tell us what will happen in cats?

Mouse studies help explain NMN’s potential. A 12-month experiment found improvements in selected metabolic and activity measures, with no significant survival difference during the intervention. It did not establish a feline dose or cat benefit. Feline NMN cell-culture experiments are also distinct from giving a supplement by mouth to a pet cat. 3 4

When should I call the veterinarian after starting a supplement?

Seek advice promptly if your cat stops eating, vomits repeatedly, develops concerning diarrhea, becomes markedly lethargic or may be dehydrated. Pause the new product and have its label, estimated amount consumed and timing ready. For an accidental excess, contact the veterinarian with those details rather than waiting for symptoms. 14

Does NMN support heart health or activity in research models?

NMN showed protective effects in mouse experiments involving doxorubicin-related heart injury and loss of physical function. Those were specific drug-toxicity models. They do not establish NMN as a treatment for feline heart disease or a supplement to add during a cat’s cancer treatment without the treating veterinarian’s guidance. 8

Aging in cats unfolds quietly. It’s not driven by a single failure, but by gradual shifts across interconnected systems — cellular energy, oxidative balance, immune tone, and tissue integrity — each influencing the others over time.

This article explores one layer of that system. To understand what actually shapes long-term health, you need to step back and look at how these layers interact.
