How NMN fits cellular energy, what researchers have found in dogs, and how to choose a supplement

Your dog’s breakfast supplies energy. To use it—to walk, think or keep a heart beating—cells need a series of chemical reactions that turn nutrients into usable fuel. NAD+ helps those reactions happen. NMN, short for nicotinamide mononucleotide, is one of the starting materials cells can use to make NAD+. 1

That connection makes NMN an interesting subject for healthy-aging research. Scientists have now studied it in dogs, including retired police dogs and a small group of cardiac patients. Their findings are worth understanding before translating “supports NAD+” into a promise about a dog’s remaining years.

This guide follows the NMN evidence and the practical choices it raises. It also explains the alternative used in our Hollywood Elixir formula: NR, a different NAD+ precursor, paired with CoQ10 and glutathione.

NMN supplies material for making NAD+, which helps cells use nutrients for energy and participates in cellular maintenance. It is related to NR, but the two ingredients are not interchangeable names.

Small dog studies have reported changes in inflammatory or cardiac blood markers. A two-week study in healthy Beagles found normal activity alongside increases in creatinine and uric acid. These findings deserve attention; they do not establish a universal dose or prove that NMN extends dogs’ lives.

Hollywood Elixir contains NR, not NMN. Its standard 2.5 g sachet combines 60 mg NR with 40 mg CoQ10 and 50 mg glutathione, bringing different aspects of cellular energy and antioxidant nutrition into one formula. Use the current dog serving directions when evaluating it.

What NMN does between a meal and cellular work

Food supplies fats, proteins and carbohydrates that the body can use in metabolism. NAD+ accepts electrons during some of the reactions that break nutrients down, becoming NADH. Those electrons can then help drive production of ATP, a molecule that powers much of a cell’s work. 1 8

NMN’s role comes earlier: cells can use it to make NAD+. It is a raw material for the system, rather than a stimulant or a packet of energy. That distinction explains why an NMN supplement would be investigated through metabolism and cellular function, rather than expected to produce a caffeine-like lift.

NMN, NR and NAD+: three names, three molecules

NAD+ stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide, an intermediate used in its production. NR—nicotinamide riboside—is another precursor. In one route, an enzyme adds a phosphate group to NR to make NMN; another reaction turns NMN into NAD+. 1

Is NMN better than NR because it is one step closer?

A pathway drawing can make NMN look like the obvious shortcut. Oral supplementation is more complicated: an ingredient has to move through digestion, absorption and metabolism before a particular tissue can use it.

In mouse muscle-cell experiments, researchers found that enzymes involved in NR metabolism were also needed for the response to externally supplied NMN. That finding shows why counting arrows on a diagram cannot settle which oral product works better. 1

There is NMN research in dogs

The canine evidence is no longer limited to speculation from mouse aging experiments. Three particularly useful papers ask different questions: a 2020 study examined short-term exposure in healthy Beagles; a 2024 experiment measured responses in older working dogs; and a 2026 report followed cardiac blood markers in eight clinical cases. 2 3 4

Taken together, they show why researchers remain interested in NMN. They also reveal how far a claim can travel beyond its source. Normal behavior during a short safety experiment, a change in an inflammatory molecule and a longer, healthier life are three different findings.

What happened in the retired-police-dog study

In 2024, researchers reported an intervention study involving 17 retired police dogs, with an average age of about nine. Five received NMN; the others received rapamycin or a stem-cell treatment. The dogs included Belgian Malinois and Kunming dogs. 3

The NMN group had lower measured levels of two inflammatory signaling proteins, IL-6 and TNF-alpha, after treatment than before it. That is a concrete biological signal, and a reason to investigate further.

There was no untreated or placebo group in this intervention. With five NMN dogs and a before-and-after comparison, the experiment cannot show how much of the change NMN caused. It also did not establish improved day-to-day mobility, memory or lifespan. A separate analysis of 30 dogs appeared in the same paper; those were not 30 dogs treated with NMN.

NMN helps build a molecule that cells use to extract energy from food.

The 2026 heart report: an intriguing marker, a small case series

A more recent report followed eight dogs with elevated NT-proBNP, a blood marker used when evaluating strain on the heart. Several had lower readings after receiving NMN, and some readings returned to the laboratory’s normal range. 4

The dogs had different medical circumstances, and some also received conventional treatment. Two with advanced heart disease continued to have high readings and died despite treatment. The report therefore describes a mixed set of clinical courses, without an untreated comparison.

A falling marker may be useful to investigate, but it does not by itself demonstrate repair of the heart. Kidney function can also affect NT-proBNP interpretation. This company-affiliated case series raises a research question; it does not justify replacing a dog’s cardiac medication with NMN.

What the two-week safety study actually found

The 2020 experiment included ten healthy, four-year-old Beagles. Five received NMN for 14 days and five served as controls. The researchers reported normal activity and coat appearance in the treated dogs. They also found higher serum nicotinamide, a related vitamin B3 compound, and increases in creatinine and uric acid. 2

The distinction between nicotinamide and NAD+ matters here: the canine result was not a direct measurement of increased NAD+ in the dogs’ tissues. Other results in the paper, including increased liver NAD+, came from mice.

This short experiment provides useful tolerability information, with blood changes that warrant further study. It does not establish safety over years or settle use in an older dog with kidney disease.

Will NMN give an older dog more good days?

That is the outcome most owners care about: enjoying a familiar walk, eating comfortably, sleeping well and remaining interested in life. The NMN studies above have not yet established reliable improvements in those everyday outcomes or demonstrated a longer canine lifespan.

That leaves room for research without making your dog’s current problems wait. Pain can appear as a reluctance to climb stairs, slower movement or a change in behavior. A short video of the movement that worries you can help the veterinary team assess it. 5

If your dog is slowing down, describing when and how it happens gives a clinician more to work with than assuming the dog needs more NAD+.

Why Hollywood Elixir uses NR

If your interest in NMN began with the NAD+ system, it is sensible to consider NR too. Both are connected to NAD+ production, though their chemistry and supplement evidence need to be assessed separately. 1

We use NR in Hollywood Elixir. A standard 2.5 g sachet contains 60 mg NR, alongside 40 mg CoQ10 and 50 mg reduced glutathione. It contains no NMN. 7

The reason to explore the formula is its broader nutritional design: a precursor for NAD+ together with ingredients involved in energy transfer and antioxidant defense. That offers a relevant alternative for an owner considering daily cellular-energy support, without requiring NMN to be the only route worth discussing.

Why the companion ingredients belong there

The connection between NAD+ and CoQ10 is a chemical handoff. NADH passes electrons through a mitochondrial protein complex to CoQ10, which carries them onward in the process of making usable energy. 8

Glutathione has a different role. An enzyme uses it to convert hydrogen peroxide, a reactive oxygen molecule, into water. 9 Energy production and antioxidant defenses are both part of the same working cell, but they require different molecules.

DVM Voice: Clinical Vignette of a Common Pattern in Senior Dog Aging

Rex, a 7-year-old Labrador Retriever, was brought in after his owner noticed he was slower to rise, hesitant on stairs, and less able to play as before. Examination showed stiffness and reduced hip mobility; radiographs confirmed degenerative joint changes.

His care required weight management, veterinary-guided pain control, nutritional support, and rehabilitation — a comprehensive plan, but one started only after visible decline appeared.

Clinical takeaway: Rex’s case reflects the value of proactive aging support: maintaining lean body condition, monitoring mobility early, and supporting cellular resilience, antioxidant defense, and healthy inflammatory balance before decline becomes obvious.

Single-case vignette. Not generalizable. Veterinary oversight is essential for pain, stiffness, or suspected joint disease.

NMN dosage for dogs: why research numbers are not a dosing chart

The Beagle safety study gave 1,340 mg NMN per dog per day, divided into two administrations. That was a short research exposure in healthy dogs weighing roughly 9–11 kg, not a recommendation for owners. 2

The other canine reports used different protocols and studied different outcomes. They do not establish one NMN dose that reliably improves healthy aging across breeds, sizes and medical conditions.

If a veterinarian recommends a trial, the plan needs the exact product, amount, schedule and reason for using it. Do not convert an NMN research amount into extra sachets of an NR blend. Besides changing the precursor, that would increase every companion ingredient.

Powder, capsules or drops: the format has to work in the bowl

The simplest format is the one your dog can take reliably under the product’s directions. A powder left in an unfinished meal and drops added to a water bowl both leave uncertainty about how much was consumed. A capsule that gets spat out has the same problem.

Compare the stated amount per capsule, scoop or measured volume. “A dropper” is useful only when the label specifies the volume and ingredient concentration it means. Keep the original packaging and follow its storage directions.

If your dog is refusing food and therefore missing prescribed medicine, tell the prescribing veterinarian promptly. Finding a tasteless supplement does not resolve the more immediate problem of missed treatment.

What a useful NMN label should tell you

Look for the full ingredient name, the amount supplied by the directed serving and the complete list of other ingredients. A large number on the front may describe a blend or an entire container rather than the NMN in one serving.

For example, “500 mg blend” does not identify the NMN amount unless the manufacturer discloses it separately. A batch report is more useful when it identifies the product, lot, test and result, so you can see what was actually checked.

Can you give a dog your own NMN supplement?

Check the whole formulation with your veterinarian before sharing a human product. Strengths, added actives, flavorings and sweeteners can make a product unsuitable even when its headline ingredient is the one you intended to buy.

Xylitol is particularly important. It can occur in human supplements and may be labeled birch sugar or wood sugar. It is poisonous to dogs. Suspected ingestion warrants immediate contact with a veterinarian, emergency clinic or animal poison service. 6

A human serving reduced in proportion to body weight is not a validated canine dose. Keep the complete label available when asking about a product.

Existing illness changes the conversation

A dog with kidney disease, heart disease or a complicated treatment plan needs an individual decision. The creatinine and uric-acid changes in the short Beagle study are a reason to discuss kidney health before use. The experiment involved healthy dogs; it did not test NMN as a treatment for kidney patients. 2

Take the proposed label and the list of current medicines and supplements to the clinician overseeing care. How to assess a new routine without guessing

Before starting, write down the product, serving and date, along with what you hope to observe. A familiar walking route, appetite and a specific movement such as getting into the car provide clearer reference points than “seems younger.” Keep existing treatment changes in the same record.

Agree on a review plan with your veterinarian. The studies here do not establish a standard number of days before an owner should see a benefit, and a good week cannot reveal a blood NAD+ concentration.

If a new supplement is followed by concerning symptoms or reduced eating, stop it and contact your veterinary team with the packaging and timing. You do not need to complete a planned trial before reporting a problem.

Choosing an NMN product or a broader NAD+ formula

An NMN-only product lets you evaluate that particular ingredient, preparation and amount. An NR-based combination asks a different purchasing question: whether the complete set of ingredients fits the nutritional approach you want.

Hollywood Elixir is worth considering when your interest extends from NAD+ production to the energy-transfer and antioxidant processes around it. Its NR, CoQ10 and glutathione make those different roles explicit, while bringing them into a single daily powder. 7 8 9

Choose it for that combination, rather than treating it as an NMN product under another name. Compare the current dog directions with everything else your dog already receives.

NMN has progressed into small canine studies with findings worth following. The clearest purchase begins with a clear purpose: investigating NMN specifically, comparing NAD+ precursors, or choosing a broader formula for a healthy-aging routine.

What is NMN for dogs?

NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide, a compound cells can use to make NAD+. NAD+ helps transfer electrons in metabolism, allowing cells to use energy from nutrients, and participates in cellular maintenance. That biological role explains research interest; it does not establish that every dog benefits from an NMN supplement.

Does NMN help dogs live longer?

The canine studies discussed here have not demonstrated a longer lifespan. Small experiments and case reports have measured short-term tolerability, inflammatory proteins or a cardiac blood marker.
