What does “adaptogen” mean for a dog?

The term describes substances proposed to help an animal respond to different stresses. It appears on products containing roots, herbs and mushrooms, although those ingredients are chemically different and do not share one proven canine effect. A 2025 review describes substantial interest but limited direct dog research across the category. 1

The body’s stress response includes communication between the brain and adrenal glands, often called the HPA axis. Cortisol is one part of that signaling. Describing this pathway explains what researchers might measure; it does not show that a particular mushroom restores a dog’s cortisol rhythm. 1

“Oxidative stress” has a different meaning: damaging oxidation has outpaced protective processes. Glutathione and antioxidant enzymes participate in controlling reactive compounds inside cells. A dog looking worried is not a measurement of either cortisol or antioxidant status. 11

Why researchers are interested in reishi’s complex sugars

What the 40-beagle reishi study found

In a 2024 study, 40 adult beagles received control or 5, 10 or 15 mg/kg of an Alura reishi preparation daily for 28 days. The preparation contained at least 70% beta-glucans. The dogs were vaccinated on day seven. 2

Seven days after rabies vaccination, the highest-dose group had a greater rise from baseline in the measured rabies-specific IgG antibody response than controls. Several other immune measures did not differ; some findings were only statistical trends. Anxiety and sleep were not tested.

Alura funded the study, and one coauthor was an employee. These findings concern that preparation and setting; the study dose is not a home-use instruction.

A reishi percentage needs its ingredient name beside it

Hollywood Elixir declares 25 mg of Reishi Mushroom Powder P.E., standardized to 35% polysaccharides, per full sachet. “Polysaccharides” is a broader description than “beta-glucans”; this declaration does not make it the preparation used in the beagle study. 7

The formula separately includes 50 mg of yeast-derived beta-1,3/1,6-D-glucan. Those two entries have different source identities. Adding their weights does not produce a combined reishi dose, and comparing a human capsule by milligrams alone cannot establish equivalence.

In adult beagles, a specific reishi preparation increased the measured antibody response after rabies vaccination.

Ashwagandha has a separate canine stress trial

A 2022 randomized, double-blind trial enrolled 24 client-owned dogs experiencing stress and anxiety. Twelve received a standardized KSM-66 ashwagandha root extract and twelve received placebo for four weeks. The extract dose was 15 mg/kg daily. 3

The supplemented group showed a larger reduction in the urinary cortisol-to-creatinine ratio and in the fear/anxiety domain of an owner-completed behavior questionnaire than placebo. No adverse events were reported during the trial.

This is a useful, positive result from a small study of a named extract. It is not reishi evidence, and Hollywood Elixir does not contain ashwagandha. Neither the dose nor the result should be transferred to another botanical simply because both are called adaptogens. 7
