NR with collagen, or a broader cellular-health formula?

LongTails keeps its active list to NR and collagen. That is an appealing choice when collagen is a deliberate part of the plan and a short ingredient list matters to you. Hollywood Elixir’s companion ingredients serve a different purpose: CoQ10 participates in energy production, while reduced glutathione and its vitamin companions belong to the cell’s protective chemistry.

The distinction is worth understanding before comparing prices. You are deciding whether to add collagen alongside the precursor or choose a formula that develops the energy-and-antioxidant side of healthy-aging nutrition. Both powders are designed to join a meal; the meaningful difference is what goes into them.

Inside a LongTails scoop

A full LongTails serving is four grams. It contains two quantified actives: 200 mg nicotinamide riboside chloride and 1,500 mg hydrolyzed bovine collagen, Types I and III. Beef bone broth powder and beef liver powder complete the listed ingredients. 1

That disclosure is useful. You can see both the collagen amount and the animal-protein sources without trying to decode a proprietary blend. The broth and liver are listed as inactive ingredients; the label does not assign them vitamin or mineral amounts.

This review concerns the NR-and-collagen powder. Older packaging may say “Vital” or “NAD+ Precursor for Healthy Aging.” LIFE+ Daily Vitality is a separate LongTails formula, so its ingredients and research should not be folded into this comparison.

What the NAD+ name means

Food contains energy, but cells need a way to make it available for their work. As nutrients are broken down, NAD+ accepts electrons and becomes NADH. Those electrons can then move through machinery in mitochondria that helps produce ATP—the molecule used to power much of a cell’s activity. 10

NR, short for nicotinamide riboside, is a precursor: a material cells can use to make NAD+. Both products use NR. LongTails’ NAD+ headline therefore describes the biological target; its label identifies NR chloride as the ingredient supplied.

Why 200 mg and 60 mg are not a strength score

The full LongTails scoop lists 200 mg of NR chloride. The full Hollywood Elixir sachet lists 60 mg of NR tartrate. Keep the last word attached to each number: these are weights of different named ingredient materials, not a direct measurement of the NR that reaches a dog’s tissues. 1 4

The dog’s portion matters too. A 25 lb dog receives half a LongTails scoop or one Hollywood Elixir sachet; a 50 lb dog receives one scoop or two sachets. Comparing only the front-of-pack numbers overlooks that change.

The amounts make the labels more informative. They do not establish that one formula is several times more potent, better absorbed or more effective. There is no head-to-head canine outcome study in the evidence reviewed here to turn those masses into a clinical ranking.

What collagen adds to the decision

Collagen is a structural protein: it helps give connective tissues their form and strength. “Hydrolyzed” means the protein has been broken into smaller fragments called peptides. Those fragments are what a hydrolyzed-collagen supplement supplies; it does not deliver ready-made skin or cartilage to the place an owner wants to improve.

LongTails identifies bovine Types I and III collagen and positions it for skin and coat. At a full scoop, its 1,500 mg is a substantial, clearly stated part of the formula. Hollywood Elixir does not contain a matching collagen ingredient. 1

That is a real reason to choose LongTails if you specifically want collagen alongside NR. The next question is more precise than “does collagen work?” It is which collagen preparation was studied, in which dogs, and for which result.

The canine collagen study is encouraging—and specific

A 2024 controlled study enrolled 41 dogs with osteoarthritis; 31 completed the twelve-week study. The collagen group received PETAGILE, a particular hydrolyzed peptide preparation made predominantly from porcine Type I collagen. Other groups received an omega-3/vitamin E supplement or placebo. 8

Some gait measures improved in the collagen group. Owners also rated quality of life more highly than before, but that improvement was not significantly different from placebo. Activity-monitor measurements did not change. It is useful canine research because it looked at both owner reports and measured movement.

LongTails declares bovine Types I and III collagen, not the tested porcine preparation. Source, processing, peptide composition and daily amount can differ. The study supports interest in particular collagen peptides for dogs with osteoarthritis; it does not establish that LongTails produces the same joint result or a skin-and-coat benefit.

Why Hollywood Elixir pairs NR with CoQ10

NAD+ is part of an ongoing sequence. After it has accepted electrons and become NADH, NADH passes electrons into the mitochondrial chain. Coenzyme Q carries electrons onward within that machinery, helping the process that produces ATP. The precursor and CoQ therefore have different jobs in making food’s energy usable. 10

Hollywood Elixir includes both NR and CoQ10, alongside B vitamins that serve as materials for metabolic cofactors. It is a formula built around more of the energy-producing process than the NAD+ precursor alone.

How glutathione helps protect cells

Cells also have to manage reactive byproducts. Reduced glutathione helps an enzyme turn hydrogen peroxide into water. In doing so, glutathione becomes oxidized. Another enzyme regenerates its reduced form so it can be used again; that recycling enzyme contains a cofactor made from vitamin B2, or riboflavin. 11 12 13

Hollywood Elixir contains reduced glutathione and riboflavin alongside NR and CoQ10. Making energy usable and maintaining antioxidant defenses are both continuing jobs inside the same living cell.

Its full formula also includes vitamins C and E, astaxanthin, plant-derived ingredients, and beta-glucan and reishi selected for the product’s immune-nutrition design. These normal biological roles explain our formulation choices; they are not a claim that the finished powder has produced a measured improvement in a dog. The quantities apply to the named preparations. For example, 2 mg of the 2% astaxanthin preparation is not 2 mg of pure astaxanthin. Additional ingredients are chicken flavor, chicken liver powder, yeast extract, glycine and hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin.

What the human NR trial tells us

The 2019 NR chloride trial enrolled 140 healthy overweight adults. Participants received placebo or 100, 300 or 1,000 mg NR daily for eight weeks. Whole-blood NAD+ increased in a dose-dependent way, and the study reported no significant difference in adverse events between the NR and placebo groups. 6

A rise in whole-blood NAD+ is a biomarker change. It shows that the intervention affected something measurable in that human population. It does not tell us whether a dog will walk farther, think more clearly or live longer—and the human milligram amounts do not set a dog’s serving.

Both products share the interest in NR. This study helps explain that interest; it does not choose between LongTails and Hollywood Elixir or test either finished formula.

The dog evidence asks two different questions

NR has been administered directly to dogs in research. EFSA’s assessment includes short studies of NR chloride in juvenile Beagles, lasting seven and twenty-eight days. These were toxicology studies, including high exposures at which adverse effects occurred. They contribute safety information; they were not trials of healthy-aging benefits at a household supplement serving. 7

A separate 2024 trial enrolled 70 older dogs with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment. It tested a proprietary daily NAD-precursor component together with a monthly senolytic component. At the three-month endpoint, owner-reported cognitive scores differed among groups, with the greatest improvement in the full-dose group. Research cognitive tests and activity monitoring did not show significant group effects. 9

That second study is interesting canine evidence for a specific combination. It cannot isolate an NR effect, and neither LongTails nor Hollywood Elixir was the product tested. Our NR guide for dogs separates these study types in more detail.

Serving size changes how long a pack lasts

LongTails uses scoop fractions. Its photographed directions give half a scoop below 26 lb, one scoop from 27–75 lb, and one-and-a-half scoops above 76 lb. The current shopping selector says “76 lb+” for the largest band. Ask the brand to clarify an exact 26 lb or 76 lb serving rather than guessing between inconsistent boundaries. 2

For supply planning, use the advertised 30 full scoops per jar. That lasts 60 days at half a scoop, 30 days at one scoop, or 20 days at one-and-a-half scoops. The photographed panel says 31 servings; the current offer promises 30.

Hollywood Elixir’s adult guidance is half a sachet daily below 7 lb, one sachet from 7–30 lb, and two sachets above 30 lb. Choose Lite, Standard or Double accordingly. A “daily serving” is therefore not automatically one scoop or one sachet for every dog. 5

From the container to the meal bowl

LongTails supplies a scoop for its loose powder. Mix the measured amount into wet food or moistened kibble; the brand also suggests a splash of warm water to make a gravy poured over dinner. Its label says to give it during or after a meal. Keep the scoop dry and the jar in a cool, dry place. 1 2

Hollywood Elixir’s sealed sachets remove the need to level a scoop for the Standard and Double portions. Both are food-mixed powders, so reliable meal acceptance matters with either. A dog that leaves part of the meal has also left part of the supplement.

The protein sources may make the practical decision for you. LongTails contains beef ingredients; Hollywood Elixir contains chicken ingredients and milk-derived whey protein isolate. That isolate is a different ingredient form from hydrolyzed whey protein. Use the exact ingredient list when discussing food sensitivities or a prescribed diet.

Quality information you can inspect

An ingredient label states what is intended to be in a product. A finished-lot quality record describes what was reported for an identified batch and against which specifications. Those are different, useful pieces of information.

LongTails says its product is made in the USA in a cGMP facility. We did not find a downloadable finished-lot report in the current product, home and About pages checked for this review. Ask the brand for the report for your jar; that limited public access does not establish that testing has not taken place. 3

Hollywood Elixir provides a public COA Lookup. Use the lot on your package to inspect the matching record, including its issuer, reported results and test limits. That access helps you assess the quality documentation directly. It is separate from evidence of a health benefit.

What the daily routine costs

LongTails is the lower-cost route to NR and collagen. Hollywood Elixir’s premium buys a different formulation: NR alongside CoQ10, reduced glutathione and the other ingredients chosen for energy production and antioxidant defense. The value of that wider formula depends on whether it is the nutritional purpose you want.

Before adding either to an existing routine

Show your veterinarian the complete formula if your dog takes medication, has a health condition or already uses other supplements. The relevant question is whether these particular ingredients and amounts fit the plan—including any overlapping vitamins, antioxidants or NR.

LongTails’ label says safe use in pregnant animals or animals intended for breeding has not been proven. It is a dog-only product and advises administration with or after food to reduce gastrointestinal upset. Stop and consult your veterinarian if the animal’s condition worsens or does not improve. 2

Hollywood Elixir is intended for adult pets. Neither formula is a reason to double up on NAD+ supplements automatically. Starting one planned addition at a time also makes an unwanted reaction easier to trace.

What to notice once you start

First, make sure the dog eats the prepared meal and tolerates the addition. Appetite, stool and any new digestive upset are more immediately useful observations than trying to infer a cellular change from a good afternoon.

Choose one everyday observation that matters to you—such as willingness to join a usual walk—and describe it consistently. An observation can inform a discussion with your veterinarian without becoming proof that a supplement caused it.

A new change in mobility, behavior or appetite deserves its own assessment. Do not wait for a supplement to explain or resolve it, and do not let a refund window determine how long to continue something the dog is not tolerating.

We favor Hollywood Elixir when the aim is to make NAD+ nutrition part of a broader daily formula. NR supplies a precursor; CoQ10 belongs to the machinery that makes energy usable; reduced glutathione and its companions belong to antioxidant defense. LongTails remains a clear alternative when you specifically want bovine collagen alongside NR and prefer a short, beef-based ingredient list. Its collagen is a genuine distinction, not something Hollywood Elixir claims to replace.

How is Hollywood Elixir different?

Both formulas contain NR. LongTails pairs it with collagen; Hollywood Elixir combines NR tartrate with CoQ10, reduced glutathione, vitamin cofactors and other ingredients selected for cellular-energy, antioxidant and immune nutrition. Hollywood Elixir has 17 declared active ingredients and no comparable collagen ingredient.

Does 200 mg NR make LongTails stronger than Hollywood Elixir’s 60 mg?

The figures are declared amounts of different materials—NR chloride and NR tartrate—and the dog’s serving can be a fraction or multiple of the reference portion. Those numbers alone do not establish comparative absorption, potency or a better canine outcome.
