Start a crash-tested dog car harness shortlist with the exact model’s independent evidence, then verify size and installation. A brand-level claim or a strong lifting handle is not enough. The harness must fit your dog and connect to the vehicle as the current instructions require.

The Center for Pet Safety listings for Sleepypod Clickit Range and Saker Bomber provide concrete test records to examine. They do not establish a universal safest harness, a guarantee in every collision or permission to substitute accessories.

Check the current independent listing for the exact model and size.

Keep the reported test-dog weight separate from the manufacturer’s sizing chart.

Rehearse fit and model-specific belt routing while parked.

A testing claim and a current certification record answer different questions

“Crash tested” says that testing occurred, but on its own does not describe the protocol, result, size or setup. CPS describes its certification program as voluntary, with commitments to independently developed standards and product quality control. 1 A current model listing lets you check more of those details than a broad marketing phrase.

The useful question is not whether a brand has ever passed a test. It is whether the product, size and configuration you intend to use match the documented evidence. Do not interpret an unlisted variant as proven to have failed; treat the gap as something to resolve before relying on a certification claim.

Two model-specific records to compare

CPS lists Clickit Range in Small, Medium, Large and X-Large, with a passed November 2024 test, its 5 Star rating, protocol CPS-001-014.01 and test number V241364F. The entry reports a 110 lb test-dog weight. 2

For Saker Bomber, CPS lists X-Small, Small, Medium and Large, a passed November 2022 test and the same 5 Star rating and protocol. Its test number is V25615F, with a reported 75 lb test-dog weight. 3 These are CPS ratings and test conditions, not LPL scores or a head-to-head real-world outcome study. A larger reported test weight does not make one harness the better fit for every dog.

Comparison transcribed from current independent CPS entries and exact manufacturer instructions. Ratings are CPS’s; no independent LPL crash or physical-fit testing was performed.

This is not a safety ranking or guarantee. Test-dog weights are not sizing charts, and current manufacturer variants may require additional certification-scope confirmation.

Resolve the size and variant before buying

Sleepypod’s current page discusses regular and long Range versions and also lists 2X-Large. The captured CPS entry explicitly names S through XL. 24 If your choice is not clearly matched by that independent listing, ask Sleepypod and CPS to confirm the exact variant’s scope; do not expand the listing yourself from a family-level statement.

Bomber’s current page gives separate neck and girth ranges, rather than one weight-only choice. It also has a neck buckle so fitting need not involve pulling the harness over the head. 5 Compare both measurements and the body panels with your dog. A size that closes around the torso can still need adjustment elsewhere; use the maker’s fitting guidance and resolve any mismatch before travel.

Keep each harness’s belt route attached to that harness

The current Range/Range Long instruction sheet places the logo at the centre of the chest and checks fit while the dog stands, with two fingers laid flat under the buckles. For vehicle use it routes the belt through the loops on the back. The sheet then describes allowing the dog to lie down, buckling and activating the belt’s ratcheting lock. It also directs the owner to install the Buckle Shield and S-Clip according to their instructions. 6 Follow that complete current procedure and check compatibility with the vehicle’s belt instructions; do not substitute an older Sport or Terrain tutorial.

Bomber’s current product instructions route the car belt directly through its top handle. 5 That is a different attachment path. A lead ring, lifting point or extension strap should not be substituted because it looks convenient. If routing prevents the dog from settling or cannot be reproduced with your seat belt, seek model-specific help rather than altering the tested arrangement.

Make the parked-car trial part of the decision

Fit the harness before a necessary journey and practise the full setup while parked. Range’s manual says the pet should be able to sit or lie comfortably and ride in the back seat. 6 For a senior dog, also check whether you can reach the buckles and route the belt without awkward handling of the dog.

Boarding and crash restraint remain separate tasks even when a harness has additional uses. Plan how the dog reaches the seat, then how the travel restraint is fitted. Use the current manufacturer instructions for inspection, care and any crash-replacement process. The strongest shortlist is the one where the evidence, size, physical fit and permitted installation all match.

For the wider room-by-room plan, see home modifications for senior dogs. This guide resolves the equipment choice; the home plan puts it alongside the other changes your dog needs.

For the route onto the seat, dog ramps for cars covers supported landing and door fit; lifting harnesses for senior dogs covers individually demonstrated assistance.

DVM Voice: Clinical Vignette of a Common Pattern in Senior Dog Aging

Case provided by JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM

Rex, a 7-year-old Labrador Retriever, was brought in after his owner noticed he was slower to rise, hesitant on stairs, and less able to play as before. Examination showed stiffness and reduced hip mobility; radiographs confirmed degenerative joint changes.

His care required weight management, veterinary-guided pain control, nutritional support, and rehabilitation — a comprehensive plan, but one started only after visible decline appeared.

Clinical takeaway: Rex’s case reflects the value of proactive aging support: maintaining lean body condition, monitoring mobility early, and supporting cellular resilience, antioxidant defense, and healthy inflammatory balance before decline becomes obvious.

Single-case vignette. Not generalizable. Veterinary oversight is essential for pain, stiffness, or suspected joint disease.

FAQ

Does “crash tested” mean CPS certified?

No. A testing claim does not by itself establish participation in CPS’s voluntary certification program. Check the current independent entry for the exact model, listed sizes, protocol and result, then compare it with the product and configuration you intend to use. 1

Which of these harnesses is safest?

The cited CPS records give both Clickit Range and Saker Bomber a 5 Star rating under the listed protocol. They do not establish a universal winner for every dog and crash. Choose only after matching the independent evidence to the exact size, fit and installation you can use. 23

Is the test-dog weight the sizing limit?

It is a reported test condition, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s sizing chart. Check the listed certification sizes, the current manufacturer’s intended range and your dog’s measurements together. Do not infer that every size fits a dog at the highest reported test weight.

Can I clip the harness to a generic car tether?

Do not replace the specified attachment route with a generic tether. The current Range instructions route the belt through back loops; Bomber routes it through the top handle. Follow the exact current manual and resolve vehicle compatibility before use. 56

Can I use a lifting harness as a crash restraint?

Only when the exact product separately has suitable vehicle-restraint evidence and matching installation instructions. A strong handle, full-body fit or lifting claim does not establish crash performance. Select boarding assistance and the travelling restraint as distinct jobs.

Aging in dogs is not driven by a single pathway. It’s the result of interacting biological systems—energy metabolism, oxidative stress, immune signaling, and structural integrity—changing over time.

This article explores one piece of that puzzle. If you want to understand how these pieces connect—and what actually moves the needle—you need to zoom out.
