To clean a dog bed after pee, separate the cover, any liner and the core before choosing a wash method. Follow the label for each layer: putting a washable cover in the machine does not mean the foam or heated insert can go with it.

Separate parts before choosing the wash method.

The cleaner label and bed label must both permit the treatment.

Reassemble only when each component is clean and dry.

Move the dog to clean dry bedding first

Provide an acceptable resting alternative, then remove loose soiling and separate removable parts according to the bed’s instructions. Note which layers are wet before selecting a cleaner. Keep cleaning products and used bedding away from the dog during the work.

If leakage is new, contact your veterinarian. PDSA advises keeping the dog clean and dry because urine left on skin can scald. 5 The bed-cleaning task and the cause of the accident need attention together.

Read each layer’s label before adding water

A cover, liner and foam core can have three different care methods. Barker directs owners to remove the cover for cold gentle washing, while its liner uses cool water and hang drying. 1 FurHaven’s Plush & Suede foam is spot-cleaned with mild soap and air-dried; it and the bolsters must not go into the washing machine. 2

For a powered bed, unplug it and use its specific electrical-care directions. K&H Lectro-Soft permits damp-cloth or sponge cleaning with mild dish detergent for the bed and forbids machine washing it; the removable fleece has its own wash instructions. 3 Do not treat the whole bed as ordinary washable fabric.

Choose the method by the affected component

Removable Barker coverCold gentle wash after removal 1That the mattress joins it in the machine
Barker linerCool-water wash and hang dry 1That heat is harmless to the barrier
FurHaven foam corePermitted spot cleaning and air drying 2That saturating it with cleaner is allowed
K&H Lectro-Soft bedUnplug; permitted surface cleaning 3That a washable fleece makes the powered bed washable

Match the cleaner’s directions to the material

Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer Plus for Dogs specifies full-strength treatment on permitted surfaces, a 15-minute working period and blotting; it excludes leather, suede, silk, wool specialty fabrics and untreated hardwood. 4 Those directions belong to that exact formula, not every product with “urine” on the label.

The cleaner’s soaking instruction is not permission to soak a foam or electrical insert whose maker forbids it. Both sets of instructions must be compatible. Check the material and the cleaner’s directions, and ask the bed maker if compatibility is unclear. Do not mix cleaners or use a stronger homemade combination to compensate for a restricted wash method.

Dry completely and inspect before rebuilding

Follow the permitted drying method for every layer. A cover may feel dry while the core or liner remains damp. Keep the components separate until they are ready, then inspect for damage, persistent soiling or a failed barrier before reassembling.

If urine has soaked a core that cannot be cleaned and dried adequately under its instructions, contact the maker about replacement rather than concealing it under a fresh cover. Washable beds for incontinent dogs compares systems designed around repeated accidents; washable pee pads for senior dogs covers an extra removable layer when appropriate.

DVM Voice: Clinical Vignette of a Common Pattern in Senior Dog Aging

Case provided by JoAnna Pendergrass, DVM

Rex, a 7-year-old Labrador Retriever, was brought in after his owner noticed he was slower to rise, hesitant on stairs, and less able to play as before. Examination showed stiffness and reduced hip mobility; radiographs confirmed degenerative joint changes.

His care required weight management, veterinary-guided pain control, nutritional support, and rehabilitation — a comprehensive plan, but one started only after visible decline appeared.

Clinical takeaway: Rex’s case reflects the value of proactive aging support: maintaining lean body condition, monitoring mobility early, and supporting cellular resilience, antioxidant defense, and healthy inflammatory balance before decline becomes obvious.

Single-case vignette. Not generalizable. Veterinary oversight is essential for pain, stiffness, or suspected joint disease.

Glossary

spot cleaning: Cleaning the affected area of a component rather than washing or soaking the entire piece.

full-strength: Used without diluting the product. Follow this only where both the exact cleaner's label and the bed's care directions permit the treatment.

blotting: Absorbing liquid or lifting stain with a clean cloth after the cleaner's specified working period.

FAQ

Can I put the whole dog bed in the washing machine?

Only if the exact maker explicitly permits it. FurHaven prohibits machine washing its foam and bolsters; K&H forbids washing the Lectro-Soft powered bed in a machine. Removable covers have separate instructions. 2 3

Will an enzyme cleaner work on every dog bed?

No product can be assumed compatible with every material. Nature’s Miracle Urine Destroyer Plus excludes several fabrics, and its soaking directions may conflict with a bed core’s care restrictions. Follow both labels. 4

What if the foam still smells after the allowed cleaning?

Ask the bed maker whether further treatment or replacement is appropriate. Do not hide a persistently soiled or damp core beneath a clean cover. A different liner or washable-insert system may be more practical for recurring accidents.

Aging in dogs is not driven by a single pathway. It’s the result of interacting biological systems—energy metabolism, oxidative stress, immune signaling, and structural integrity—changing over time.

This article explores one piece of that puzzle. If you want to understand how these pieces connect—and what actually moves the needle—you need to zoom out.
