What quercetin does in cells

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid: a naturally occurring compound investigated for antioxidant activity and effects on inflammatory signals. That interest has a concrete basis. In a separate canine intestinal-tissue model, it lowered selected oxidative and inflammatory responses. 1 2

Histamine explains the allergy interest

Mast cells are immune cells that can release histamine and other chemical signals. Histamine contributes to allergic responses, which makes its release a plausible target for investigation. Quercetin’s activity in human mast-cell cultures gives the popular allergy story a specific starting point. 1

In those experiments, quercetin reduced histamine release and selected inflammatory signals from human mast cells. The finding shows activity in a controlled cellular setting. It is not a demonstration that a dose swallowed by a dog reaches its skin in the same form or produces the same effect.

Calling quercetin “nature’s Benadryl” skips those steps and suggests an interchangeable treatment that has not been established. A dog’s itchy paws or recurrent ear problems can also involve infection, parasites, food reactions and immune signals beyond histamine. The cause determines what care will help. 6

A positive finding in canine intestinal tissue

A 2026 experiment examined small pieces of canine duodenal tissue maintained in culture. The researchers exposed the tissue to bacterial lipopolysaccharide, or LPS, to provoke an inflammatory response, then examined the effects of flavonoids including quercetin. 2

At the higher tested concentration, quercetin reduced reactive-oxygen measurements and selected TNF-alpha responses. Reactive oxygen molecules can contribute to oxidative stress; TNF-alpha is an inflammatory signaling protein. These are meaningful biological changes in the experimental tissue, rather than an undefined claim of “immune balance.”

The experiment used tissue from one donor dog, with repeated cultures. No dogs were fed quercetin or assessed for scratching, skin lesions or allergy relief. The result supports interest in quercetin’s cellular activity while leaving the clinical feeding question open. It also illustrates why inflammatory signaling and resolution of inflammation deserve more precise language than simply switching the immune system off.

Will quercetin relieve your dog’s itching?

There is no established answer from a controlled oral quercetin-alone trial in itchy dogs among the studies discussed here. The positive cell and tissue findings do not provide a dependable itch-relief dose, response rate or waiting period.

Persistent scratching, paw chewing, red skin or recurrent ear irritation deserves a veterinary assessment. Allergy guidelines recommend working through the history and examination, then addressing relevant parasites, infection and allergic disease. 6 A supplement cannot identify which of those is present.

Keep prescribed treatment and parasite control on the plan your veterinarian gives you. If you also want quercetin as part of a daily nutritional routine, discuss the complete product alongside that plan. Dogs absorb and transform quercetin

A study in adult beagles compared orally administered quercetin and two related forms. It found that quercetin-derived compounds reached the circulation, but much of what circulated had already been chemically modified by the body. More than 80% of the measured circulating flavonols were conjugated metabolites. 3

“Conjugated” means that the body has attached another chemical group to the compound during processing. It matters because a blood measurement is not necessarily measuring only unchanged quercetin. The study’s estimate of systemic availability included those conjugates.

The practical lesson is that a label amount and the amount circulating in the body are different things. Absorption research helps compare formulations, but it does not by itself establish how well a product relieves symptoms, whether a larger amount is better, or which daily serving suits an individual dog.

In human mast-cell experiments, quercetin reduced histamine release. Histamine is one of the chemical signals these immune cells release during allergic responses.

Quercetin, isoquercitrin and rutin are different forms

Isoquercitrin and rutin are quercetin glycosides: quercetin attached to different sugar structures. In the beagle experiment, isoquercitrin produced greater systemic exposure than quercetin, while rutin’s absorption was delayed. 3 Those differences show why the precise form on a label matters.

They do not establish that the higher-exposure form is the best treatment for canine allergies. The experiment measured pharmacokinetics—what the body did with the compounds—rather than a clinical skin outcome.

Hollywood Elixir’s ingredient guide declares Quercetin Dihydrate 95%, with 25 mg of quercetin per full 2.5 g sachet. 10 It is not declared as isoquercitrin, rutin or a quercetin phytosome. Choose it for the complete formula described below, without borrowing an absorption claim from a different material.

What quercetin with bromelain has actually shown

Bromelain refers to protein-digesting enzymes obtained from pineapple. 15 It often appears beside quercetin in supplements, but a combination label is not proof that bromelain increases quercetin absorption in dogs.

One randomized, blinded study gave 30 healthy female American Staffordshire terriers either a mixture containing quercetin, bromelain and shiitake mushroom or a placebo for 28 days. Selected fecal measures changed: calprotectin, cortisol and N-methylhistamine were lower, while short-chain fatty acids were higher in the supplemented group. Body weight and body-condition scores did not change. 4

That is a positive finding for a particular mixture and a set of fecal measurements. The study did not measure quercetin absorption or treat dogs with allergies, and it cannot assign the changes to quercetin alone. Hollywood Elixir does not declare bromelain; its wider formulation has a different composition and purpose. 10

Why a different diet cannot prove a quercetin effect

A separate eight-week study compared two diets in ten healthy adult dogs. One group received a quercetin-containing diet that also differed substantially in fat and fiber. The groups developed different blood metabolite patterns, while body weight, condition and most measured blood markers were not significantly different. 5

Because more than quercetin changed, this does not isolate the ingredient’s contribution. Despite the paper’s reference to a pancreatic diet, the enrolled dogs were healthy; it was not a treatment trial in dogs with pancreatitis.

Quercetin alongside NAD+, CoQ10 and glutathione

Quercetin brings a plant flavonoid to the formula. Hollywood Elixir combines it with ingredients connected to other parts of normal cellular function, including nicotinamide riboside, CoQ10 and reduced glutathione. 10

NR and NAD+. NAD+ helps cells turn nutrients from food into usable energy. Cells also use NAD+ in maintenance and repair reactions. NR is a precursor that enters a pathway to NAD+; it supplies starting material rather than acting as an antihistamine. Hollywood Elixir uses NR, not NMN. 7 10

CoQ10. This molecule carries electrons in the mitochondrial energy-transfer system. It has a different job from a NAD precursor, even though both belong in an explanation of cellular energy production. 8

Glutathione. Cellular enzymes use reduced glutathione in reactions that remove peroxides. 9 This gives another specific antioxidant role beside quercetin’s investigated activity. These connected functions explain the formulation’s breadth; they do not establish that the finished product treats allergies or produces a proven combined clinical effect.

NAD-related ingredients and B vitamins: nicotinamide riboside 60 mg; niacin, vitamin B3, 2 mg; riboflavin, vitamin B2, 0.5 mg; vitamin B6 1 mg; vitamin B12 0.25 mg.

Mitochondrial and antioxidant ingredients: CoQ10 40 mg; reduced glutathione 50 mg; astaxanthin 2 mg; vitamin C 10 mg; vitamin E 15 IU; resveratrol 15 mg; quercetin 25 mg.

The remaining actives: beta-glucans 50 mg; reishi 25 mg; spirulina 50 mg; blueberry powder 50 mg; whey protein isolate 250 mg.

There is no established quercetin treatment dose for canine allergy from the studies above. A dose used to measure blood exposure and a concentration applied directly to laboratory tissue answer different questions; neither should be converted into a home itch-treatment regimen.

Review medicines and the whole formula together

Long-term suitability depends on the dog and the complete product, not simply whether quercetin comes from plants. The short studies described here do not establish safety for every life stage, medical condition or drug combination. Hollywood Elixir’s directions call for veterinary review with medical conditions, medication, pregnancy or nursing, and for animals under one year. 11

Cyclosporine is a useful example of why disclosure matters. Veterinary guidance asks owners to report medicines, vitamins, supplements and herbal products. 12 A rat experiment found that quercetin and rutin altered cyclosporine exposure, but it does not supply a canine interaction estimate or a reliably safe spacing interval. 13

Show the prescriber the entire ingredient panel and proposed serving. Do not stop prescribed treatment or try to solve a potential interaction by guessing how many hours to leave between products. If vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite or another concerning change follows a new supplement, pause it and contact the clinic.

During an allergy food trial, every addition counts

An elimination-diet trial depends on controlling everything the dog consumes. Allergy guidance includes treats, flavored products and other extras in that assessment. 6 A small amount of a powder can still matter if it introduces a protein or flavor outside the agreed diet.

Note when scratching or ear problems began, whether they follow a seasonal pattern and which treatments have been used.
